German Scholar to Send Petition to Court for Release of Prof.
Song

SEOUL, Dec. 5 (Yonhap) -- A German scholar said Friday that he
will submit a petition signed by hundreds of European scholars
to a court here in an effort to have South Korean-born German
professor Song Doo-yul released from detention.

In a press conference held in downtown Seoul, East Asia expert
Rainer Werning said, "920 European scholars and human rights
activists have signed a petition to the South Korean court to
urge the government to release professor Song at once."

The scholar is also a representative of the Action Committee
in Europe, a recently formed organization of scholars and
activists aiming for the release of Song and the abolishment
of the South Korean National Security Law, under which Song
was indicted.
